June 23rd - Feedback

After class I met up with Bernie, my supervisor, to discuss the mock-ups I have created.

We decided on this infographic as the 'bones' of the project. It translates well across digital devices such as tablets and phones.
While this infographic is a solo project for this assignment, there is potential for it to be used in the project Bernie is working on. This external project is the development of a Central Darling Geotrail app which would feature the White Cliff area.

Some feedback I received included:
  • Reversing the layout:
We discussed flipping the layout so the underground illustrations of the fossils and opals would be at the top of the page. It would then read down the page like a sequential timeline of the present looking back into the past to the Cretaceous period when the Plesiosaurs were alive. We also discussed including a written timeline down the side of the page detailing key points across the millions of years. E.g. (starting at the top) current day --> formation of opal fossils --> forming opals --> depositing of skeletons on sea floor --> Plesiosaur extinction --> living era of Plesiosaurs
  • Keep the long format - specify average phone dimensions
Decided on the long format in the event that it is used on the app. Will need to look up the dimensions on a phone screen and enlarge that to find an appropriate canvas size. (Keeping in mind when illustrating in the digital space you draw larger than what you will actually need to keep the quality clear and scalable)
  • Focus on antarctic waters
When drawing the Plesiosaur the habitat should include more ice as the water temp was freezing due to our location on Gondwana. The low temp also accounted for the formation of opal pineapple crystals which will be included.
  • Little graphic elements
Include little graphic elements and outlines to help keep information simple (thinking about the smaller reading format of a phone, high detail and lots of text can get lost). We also had the idea of adding a size comparison of the Plesiosaur with a shark, human, or some other object (create the size of the Plesiosaur found in WC and the size that they could grow to).

Notes from in class presentation:
  • Orientation was also brought up, how portrait would fit better in a digital space
  • Also found a solution to adding in time-lapse videos to blogger by watching another student's presentation. Create a youtube account and add in a hyperlink. Was struggling to upload videos to blogger due to the file size.
Things to do later tonight:
Continue working on opal illustration

For tomorrow:
Rework infographic template
Start looking at what text is going to be included.

Hours logged today:
